U.S. Representative Troy Carter announced Tuesday the allocation of $1 million in federal funding for a new firearm safety initiative in New Orleans. The funding will support a program focused on distributing gun locks and promoting secure firearm storage practices among residents.

According to Hoodline, Carter stood alongside United Way and health leaders to roll out the fresh federal investment for what the organization described as a "homegrown firearm-safety effort that is quietly changing how guns are stored in local homes."

The initiative represents a coordinated effort between federal representatives, local health organizations, and community partners to address firearm safety through practical means. Secure storage initiatives like this have gained traction across the country as research consistently demonstrates the link between accessible firearms and preventable injuries and deaths, particularly among children and adolescents.

Gun safety advocates have emphasized that proper storage—including the use of gun safes, locked cabinets, and cable locks—significantly reduces the risk of accidental shootings, unintentional injuries among minors, and access to firearms by individuals in crisis. The New Orleans program joins dozens of similar initiatives across America's cities and states that distribute free or subsidized gun locks to residents.
