The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and local Tuscaloosa leaders launched a new community initiative on March 17, 2026, to distribute nearly 1,000 free gun locks to residents. Project ChildSafe Tuscaloosa aims to promote firearm safety and help prevent accidents through widespread access to secure storage devices.

According to a MarketWatch press release, the initiative represents a collaborative effort between the NSSF's Project ChildSafe program and local government and community organizations. Project ChildSafe, an established national program, has distributed millions of free gun locks and safety kits across the United States since its inception.

Free gun lock distribution programs have become increasingly common in communities nationwide as a practical approach to firearm safety. Research demonstrates that secure storage reduces the risk of accidental injuries and deaths among children and teens, as well as access to firearms during suicidal crises. The locks distributed through such programs typically include cable locks and other security devices designed to prevent unintended access.

The Tuscaloosa initiative reflects broader efforts across the country to address firearm safety through community-based partnerships. Cities and counties from Baltimore to Boulder to Salt Lake City have launched similar programs offering free locks through police departments, health departments, and community organizations.
