Erlanger Children's Hospital has launched an initiative to provide firearm safety resources directly to new parents, aiming to establish safe storage practices as part of routine newborn care. In partnership with Voices for a Safer Tennessee (Safer TN), the hospital distributes safety information cards and free cable locks to families with infants, integrating firearm security into the standard babyproofing conversation.

The program reflects growing medical consensus that pediatric firearm injuries are preventable through proper storage. Healthcare providers increasingly emphasize that secure storage—keeping firearms locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition—significantly reduces the risk of unintentional pediatric shootings and youth suicides.

The initiative has since expanded to all Erlanger emergency departments and labor and delivery locations. By providing free locks and educational materials at the hospital level, organizers hope to normalize the conversation around firearm safety among parents who may not otherwise consider storage a priority.

"Making secure storage part of babyproofing the home" positions firearm safety alongside crib safety, outlet covers, and medication storage—standard precautions parents already embrace. This approach removes stigma and emphasizes shared responsibility for child protection.

The program underscores a broader shift in pediatric health advocacy, with organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics recommending that healthcare providers discuss firearm safety with families during routine visits. Tennessee's inclusion of this initiative represents one of multiple efforts nationally to reduce preventable child firearm injuries through accessible resources and education.
